Skincare for Sun Exposure

Skincare for Sun Exposure - Kortni Jeane
It’s summertime and we are in love! We are all about the endless summer days {and nights} here at KJ and we are out of our minds excited to get our glowing tans back! But is our skin ready for that sun exposure?? The best defense in sun protection is sunscreen {every day, all the time} but the sun can take a toll on your skin, whether you’re consistent with sunscreen or not!
.
Today we’re looking at post-sun skin care tips as well as products to help us keep our skin glowing and soothing our skin when we miss a spot. The very best way to minimize sun damage is to prevent as much of it as you can in the first place, but here are some tips + products that will help you care for your skin this summer:
.
Post Sun Skin Care Tips
.
Cleanse
After a fun day under the sun, our skin would love a good cleanse! From sweat to sunscreen, summer time fun can leave your skin feeling sticky and gross. A good cleanse will remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from your skin’s surface, leaving it looking clean and comfortable. So lather up with your favorite cleanser after a summer day!
.
Moisturize
As you may already know, sun exposure dries your skin out like nothing else. After a good cleanse, give your skin the moisture it deserves with your favorite hydrating facial/skin cream! We’re huge fans of the CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion and have more of our favorite products listed below. {Pro tip: apply your moisturizer when your skin is still damp to seal it in!}
.
Soothe
Did you miss a spot and are dealing with a sunburn? After {gently} cleansing your skin, help soothe it with aloe vera. Whether you’re using pure aloe or a cocktail formula, this gel helps hydrate your skin + offers a cooling sensation for temporary relief.
.
Extra Hydration
If you’re looking to hold onto that glowing bronzed skin, you’ll need extra hydration! Hydrating sheet masks and other serums offer cooling sensation to your skin and provide that extra boost of moisture. Whatever treatment you choose, massage the serum gently into your skin for best results.
.
Lip Care!
Pucker up and give your lips the love they deserve after a day under the sun. Start your post-sun lip care routine with a lip scrub {homemade or store bought}. Lip scrubs help buff away dead cells from the skin’s surface, keeping them clean and fresh. Then use a hydrating lip conditioner to protect and soothe your beautiful pout.
For Bronzed Skin
.
So you were consistent with sunscreen and want to give your skin the love it deserves. Sunkissed skin can always benefit from a little extra TLC in the form of reparative after-sun skincare. Mixed with cool showers and drinking lots of water, these exfoliators and moisturizers will help your tan last longer! Here are our personal favorites:
.
There’s no better way to hang onto glowing bronzed skin than by slathering on the lotion! Moisturize like your life depended on it with body butter and lotion every single day! This formula is a life-saver and helps irritated, sensitive skin with soothing ingredients like rose, lavender, and oat milk. You can use any of your favorite body butters and lotions to see the same results!
.
If you have super sensitive skin and want to hang onto your natural summer glow, this plant-based hypoallergenic formula has got you covered! It’s an all-natural hydrator made with ingredients you can actually pronounce like organic shea butter and olive, jojoba, and safflower oil. This bad boy will definitely help you retain the tan you worked so hard to get while protecting your skin from drying out.
.
Exfoliation may feel like the last thing you want to do to your bronzed skin, but it’s important to give your body a weekly exfoliation to help remove dull, parched surface cells. This formula is gentle and packed with mood-boosting essential oils, so definitely give it a whirl.
.
Even bronzed skin can become dry so snatch up this classic moisturizer to keep your glow hydrated! Hawaiian Tropic has been on the shelves since childhood and for good reason! It’s vitamin-enriched so it replenishes skin that’s been exposed to drying wind, water, and sun. And get this! It smells like a refreshing lime-based colada! Mmmmmm!
For Burned Skin
.
So you ended up with a burn - that’s more than enough reminder to be careful next time. What you’ll need is some extra TLC to get your skin back on track as fast as possible. Plus, who would say no to a little soothing serum to get through the pain of a sunburn?? Check out our personal favorites:
.
Keep the healing going with this all-natural soothing formula! Aloe vera is the most effective over-the-counter treatment for healing burns while coconut oil helps skin to deal and retain moisture without being greasy or sticky. The best part? This tube is the perfect size to toss into your bag and reapply as much as you want! We don’t know where we’d be without Burt’s Bees!
.
Raise of hands if you burn and peel after some sun exposure! After-sun lotion is a must since it soothes burned skin but also helps to repair it (so you won’t peel at all or as much)! The key ingredients in Sun Bum’s after-sun lotion include vitamin E, vitamin A and aloe vera, so it’s a contender. The cooling cucumber extract prevents peeling while the yummy cocoa butter helps to further soften and protect the skin. And our favorite part is that it smells like summer!
.
After-sun lotion can be tough on your face, making this Coola lotion one of a kind! With this aloe + sunflower oil formula, a little goes a long way and it works fast so you’ll use the same bottle all summer long! A few applications in the days after a burn are key to saving your face and it works best when used at bedtime. It’s a little pricey but your delicate facial skin will thank you!
.
The aloe vera plant’s soothing gel can be used to relieve sunburn-related pain so definitely apply it where it hurts! To treat a sunburn, spread a layer of pure gel over the burnt skin. The aloe vera gel can be stored in the refrigerator to provide a more cooling sensation. Use it a few times a day and seek a doctor's help if the  burn is severe.
